Vi følger den fantastiske historie om Superman, der kommer til Jorden, efter hans hjemplanet, Krypton, er eksploderet. Han antager dæknavnet Clark Kent og møder superskurken, Lex Luther, i en superkamp, som får hele Jorden til at ryste! For at være i stand til at lave et superprojekt som dette må alt være super. Filmens superbudget var langt det største i historien, og folkene bag filmen de største: instruktøren Richard Donner (Lethal Weapon 1-4) var meget hot efter horrorhittet The Omen (1976), og manuskriptforfatterne Mario Puza og Tom Mankiewicz havde stået bag The Godfather og tre James Bond-film. Foruden Christopher Reeve i titelrollen finder vi på rollelisten Gene Hackman som Lex Luthor samt Oscar-vinderen Marlon Brando, der fik ca. 20 mio. kroner for sin rolle som Jor-El. Af alle medvirkende blev hele 12 Oscar-nominerede og var med til at gøre dette til superfilmen over alle superfilm.
